Raewyn Good Study Award for Māori and Pasifika Social Science Research

Criteria

Following is a list of criteria for the Raewyn Good Study Award. It is not intended that all applicants (graduates) meet all the criteria on this list. Please indicate in your application the relevant bullet points that apply:

  • I am of Māori or Pasifika descent or identify as Māori or Pasifika
  • I am registered, or planning to register for a Master’s degree in the social sciences in a New Zealand university
  • I will be undertaking research involving Māori or Pasifika, or vulnerable or hard-to-reach communities, or is a component of a larger piece of community-led research
  • I have the support of or linkages to that community
  • I am the first in the family (including parents) to undertake tertiary study
  • I am returning later in life to study.

Eligibility

Applicants must have social sciences as a significant part of their undergraduate degree. For the purposes of this award, social sciences shall be deemed to mean…

fields of study that may involve more empirical methods to consider society and human behaviour, including (but not limited to) anthropology, archaeology, criminology, economics, education, linguistics, political science and international relations, sociology, geography, law, and psychology. 

At the time of application, students must be engaged/enrolled in or applying for a masterate course at a New Zealand university which involves undertaking social sciences research.

Applying

Please note – there is no formal application form to complete when applying for the Raewyn Good Study Award for Māori and Pasifika Social Science Research.

Please submit your application in the following form:

  1. Full name
  2. Contact details including telephone number, fax number and email
  3. Home address and telephone number
  4. Department and university in which you are enrolled
  5. Degree for which you are currently enrolled
  6. Details of higher education: dates, institution(s), subject(s), degree(s)
  7. Copy of authorised student academic record (official record) from university registry
  8. Brief paragraph describing career goals and general interests
  9. A statement (signed by the applicant) declaring all other support awarded or applied for
  10. Brief descriptive title of proposed research (not exceeding 25 words)
  11. A detailed proposal for the planned research (approximately 1,000 words)
  12. A statement about how the money will be used to make a difference for the proposed research
  13. A reference from the university academic officially charged with your supervision, to be received at the Royal Society of New Zealand by 1 September 2017
  14. A second reference either from an individual within the university in which you are enrolled, or from an organisation (e.g., CRI, Government Department, Community Organisation or Company) where a significant amount of your postgraduate work is being carried out and where additional supervision is being provided, to be received at the Royal Society of New Zealand by 1 September 2017.
  15. A statement noting the criteria that apply to you from the above.
